President signs proclamation honoring Cesar E. Chavez

Today, President Obama signed a proclamation honoring Cesar E. Chavez on his 83th Birthday. Cesar Chavez was a civil rights leader, Latino, farm worker, and labor leader; a religious and spiritual figure; a community servant and social entrepreneur; a crusader for nonviolent social change; and an environmentalist and consumer advocate.

As Senator Robert F. Kennedy noted, Chavez was "one of the heroic figures of our time.."

"The rights and benefits working Americans enjoy today were not easily gained; they had to be won. It took generations of courageous men and women, fighting to secure decent workingconditions, organizing to demand fair pay, and sometimes risking their lives. Some, like Cesar Estrada Chavez, made it the cause of their lives. Today, on what would have been his83rd birthday, we celebrate Cesar's legacy and the progress achieved by all who stood alongside him..." continue reading the President's Proclamation

Advocates Return to Congressman Schrader’s Office for answer on Immigration Reform

Salem, Ore.-- This morning, close to 70 immigration reform advocates went to the District Office of U.S. Congressman Kurt Schrader in Salem to ask again if he would support the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity (CIR ASAP) Act (HR 4321) and the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act (HR 1751).

It had been over two months since reform advocates, led by CAUSA, last visited the Congressman's office with signed letters asking for a meeting and his support on H.R. 4321 and H.R.1751.

Today, after not receiving an answer again, advocates staged a peaceful sit-in. Francisco Lopez, CAUSA's Executive Director told the crowd and the media, "We are prepared to wait as long as it takes to receive an answer from our Congressman."

After 15 minutes into the sit-in, Congressman Schrader agreed to personally meet with leaders representing faith, labor, business, and immigrant and civil rights advocacy during the month of April. The Congressman’s Staff also met with reform advocates today-- listening to their concerns about immigration reform, family reunification and the DREAM Act.

March For America Actions Continue at Republican National Committee

Washington D.C. -- Today, in continuation of yesterday's March For America events, CAUSA and the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) were instrumental in helping to organize and lead an action at the Republican National Committee.

About 150 people representing a range of organzations from around the nation went to the offices of the RNC to ask for a meeting with Chairman Michael Steele.

With 100 pro-reform advocates outside, 50 people, including CAUSA's Executive Director Francisco Lopez and Andrea Miller, sat down on the floor in the lobby. After 20 minutes into the sit-in, it was announced that the RNC Chairman had agreed to a meeting set to take place on March 31st.

The goal of the meeting on March 31st is to ask Chairman Steele to reject obstructionist tactics that are alienating mainstream Americans and to press the Republican Party to join Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) in passing comprehensive immigration reform legislation in 2010.

The action at the RNC came just one day after the March and Rally at the National Mall in attended by immigration reform advocates from around the nation.

The reports on the numbers of those in attendance ranged from 200,000 to 500,000 people. Event Organizers had the number reported by the Parks Department and a Fox News Affiliate at around 500,000. While various others reported 200,000 and over.

Regardless of the exact number, the Marches and Rally at the National Mall yielded renewed commitments from the President and Congressional leadership to advance immigration reform legislation this year.

Sunday's March and today's action at the RNC were a prelude to in-district town halls and meetings during the spring recess. Stay tuned for details on upcoming meetings and townhalls with Legislators around Oregon.

Special Note from Sean Thomas-Breitfeld with Center for Community Change about today's action at the RNC:

"This action would not have happened without the dedicated leadership of FIRM partners. Special thanks go to: Francisco Lopez (who was unwavering in his support for this action) and leaders from CAUSA; Xiomara Corpeno (who added this to her already full plate of responsibilities for the weekend), Angelica Salas and leaders from CHIRLA; Julien Ross and the leaders from CIRC; and Stephen Noble Smith, Josh Hoyt (who conceived of this idea only 10 days ago) and leaders from ICIRR. Many many thanks also to One America, NAKASEC and Voces de la Frontera for turning out great and energized leaders for today's courageous and successful action!"

Oregonians Help Turn Up the Heat on Immigration Reform

Oregonians Help Turn Up the Heat on Immigration Reform

March 19, 2010
Chris Thomas, Public News Service - OR

PORTLAND, Ore. - More than 50 Oregonians are traveling to Washington, D.C. for Sunday's March for America, a national attempt to kick-start the stalled push for immigration reform. David Leslie, executive director of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, is one of them. He says people need a clear and fair path to U.S. citizenship, and he blames the lack of progress on a lack of political will in Congress. Leslie hopes the size and scope of the national event energizes the immigrant community and other supporters.

"The real work is not going to be in Washington, D.C. - it's coming back home where you work your district, you're working with members of congregations, you're working with your community. I think a march like this provides a real boost of energy, to take some of that back home and further the cause."

Marchers will include members of faith, and business and labor groups, all of whom say immigrants deserve a fair shot at becoming U.S. citizens. Greg Delgado, Oregon coordinator for the Bend office of Jobs With Justice, will be there. He says the current system creates unnecessary hassles - and hostilities.

"We're a small community, maybe of 11,000 Latinos, here in Central Oregon. We still, on a daily basis, hear complaints - of worker violations, racial profiling with the police - that we're trying to clarify for the community as well."

Those who want tougher immigration laws say the country can't afford an influx of new citizens. Supporters of reform believe it's a human rights issue, and that people working in the U.S., even illegally, are contributing to the economy and often paying taxes. On Sunday, tens of thousands of people are expected for a rally at the Lincoln Memorial starting at 2:00 PM (EDT), followed by a march to RFK Stadium.

Oregon marchers will meet Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 3211 Pine St. NW, Washington, D.C.

Immigration Reform Advocates to March on Washington D.C.

Tens of Thousands preparing for March 21st Action, while White House holds meetings to plan reform on immigration

Salem, Ore.--Immigration Reform advocates are stepping up pressure on the Obama Administration and Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform this year and fix America's broken immigration system.

Today, Ali Nooran, the chair of the Reform Immigration for America Campaign, and other immigrant rights leaders from grassroots, labor, and faith organizations met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the next steps for comprehensive immigration reform legislation. During the meeting, the President indicated that his administration is committed to driving a bill forward this spring.

The meeting with reform advocates came just hours before the President met with Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) to discuss their bipartisan effort to sponsor comprehensive immigration reform legislation in the Senate. With Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) having already introduced a bill (HR4321) on the House side, the desperately needed reform will be right on track to pass Congress this year.

Later today, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are also expected to meet with the President to discuss the importance of passing health care and immigration reform.

"Our broken immigration system tears families apart, and keeps millions of people from living the American dream," said Francisco Lopez, Executive Director of CAUSA. "Students want to continue their educations, but can't attend college. Workers try to organize, but are kept in the shadows by their employers. Parents working to give their children better lives are facing an outdated, convoluted system. We need comprehensive immigration reform this Spring to fix our broken system and help millions of families."

On March 21st, Oregonians will join with other reform advocates from around the nation for a March on Washington D.C.. The March For America is expected to draw tens of thousands of people from the immigrant, labor, business, progressive and faith communities and will demonstrate the energy and strength to elected leaders that the need for good jobs and full citizenship for all of America's families must be fulfilled.

"Thousands of people are marching on Washington, DC. to show Congress that we can't wait any longer," said Lopez. "Too many people have been hurt by our broken immigration system, and it's time for our leaders to do the work we elected them to do. Our families, and our country, are counting on us."

In Oregon, CAUSA and reform advocates have been busy visiting the offices of Oregon's Congressional Delegation over the last couple months urging them to support Comprehensive Immigration Reform and the DREAM Act.

Last Sunday, 600 people, mostly comprised of Latino families and clergy from the Eugene-Springfield area, gathered outside the Office of Congressman Peter DeFazio. While there, they called on the Congressman to support the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity (CIR-ASAP) Act of 2009 (HR4321) and the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2009 (HR1751). Catholic leaders from Eugene and Springfield committed on Sunday to increase the pressure on DeFazio until he announces his support of both pieces of legislation.

Although some political pundits have dismissed the immigration issue as too politically risky in a mid-term election year, immigrant community leaders are making a persuasive counter argument. As they have pointed out, Latino voters are in a position to impact scores of close House and Senate races and they are increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress on immigration reform in Congress. In a year when turnout clearly matters, can Congress and the Administration afford not to make good on promises to advance comprehensive immigration reform?

Eugene City Council Passes Resolution Supporting the DREAM Act

Eugene, Ore--Last night, the Eugene City Council passed a Resolution supporting the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act.

The DREAM Act, which was introduced in Congress last year, authorizes the cancellation and the adjustment of status for certain immigrant youths who are college bound and are long term United States Residents. It would also permit states to determine state residency for purposes of higher education.

After a public forum, Resolution 5001 was voted on and passed by the city council unanimously. The meeting was well attended with most being in support of the Resolution.

Although Resolution 5001 does not affect federal legislation, the Eugene City Council joins the growing multitude of voices around the nation calling for Congress to pass the DREAM Act. Last October, members of the Portland City Council passed a similar resolution unanimously.

Historic Procession for Immigration Reform Takes Place in Eugene

Eugene, Ore --Yesterday, 600 people, mostly comprised of Latino families from the Eugene-Springfield area, gathered outside the Office of Congressman Peter DeFazio to call for passage of Comprehensive Immigration Reform and the DREAM Act. Those in attendance were joined by four priests from the parishes of St. Mary Catholic Church, Alice Catholic Church, and St. Mark Catholic Church, and members of CAUSA, Oregon's Immigrant Rights Coalition for a Message of Faith, Hope, and Family Unity.

The goal of Sunday's Procession and Prayer Service was to call on Congressman DeFazio to support and join on as a co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity (CIR-ASAP) Act of 2009 (HR4321) and the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2009 (HR1751). Catholic leaders from Eugene and Springfield committed on Sunday to increase the pressure on DeFazio until he announces his support of both pieces of legislation.

The historic gathering of Catholic Churches in Eugene on Sunday is the first time in the city's history that they have come out into the streets to hold such an event. Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, who also spoke at the event, said she had never seen anything like the three major Lane County based Catholic Church Congregations coming out in unity to support such an issue like Immigration Reform.

Yesterday's faith-based event comes just one day before the Eugene City Council will take a vote on a resolution in support of passage of the DREAM Act. The resolution, which is expected to pass, will urge lawmakers to pass federal legislation allowing undocumented youth to be eligible for a conditional path to citizenship in exchange for completion of a college degree. Last October, members of the Portland City Council passed a similar resolution unanimously.

Later this month, Oregonians will join with others from around the nation for a National March on Washington D.C.. The March For America, set to take place on March 21st, is expected to draw tens of thousands of people from the immigrant, labor, business, progressive and faith communities and will demonstrate the energy and strength to America’s elected leaders that we need good jobs and full citizenship for all of America’s families.

FED Chairman Urges Congress to Reform Immigration System

Last Week, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke gave testimony to the Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. He listed immigration reform as one of the issues Congress should take up to improve the nation's lagging economy.

    He said:
"I think frankly, this is a topic that I can never get much traction on — I think our immigration policy which restricts severely the number of highly-trained skilled immigrants is a problem because bringing those kind of folks in helps our high-tech industries develop more competitively — become more competitive."
