What happened on May Day in Salem last year?

Last year, over 3000 immigrant and labor rights supporters rallied and marched at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem to commemorate International Workers' Day, or May Day. Individuals, clergy members, churches, labor unions, social justice & civil rights organizations, and business associations joined together to call for passage of Fair and Just Immigration Reform and an end to ICE Raids and Deportations.

If you weren't able to be there, watch this short video to see what you missed:

PORTLAND, Ore. - This could be the year to visit Hells Canyon instead of the Grand Canyon, depending on one's political point of view. Some advocates of immigration reform are asking people to leave Arizona out of their summer vacation plans, to protest its tough new state law on immigration.

Here in Oregon and around the country, the immigrant community is concerned about the law, which allows police to detain people suspected of being illegal immigrants, and requires immigrants to carry documentation of their status.

Oregon Coalition Condemns Discriminatory New Law Passed in Arizona State

Salem, Ore--Oregon's Immigrant Rights Coalition condemns the decision of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer to sign the most extreme legislation anywhere in the country to deal with the nation's broken immigration system.

Signed into law this afternoon, SB1070 provides sweeping and unprecedented immigration enforcement powers to local law enforcement; it legalizes racial profiling and civil rights violations and is a deeply troubling development, the impact spreading far beyond Arizona's state lines. The legislation will prevent local law enforcement from doing their jobs effectively, and will be prohibitively expensive to implement due to serious constitutional and legal questions.

Earth Day Will Not be Rooted in Immigrant Bashing

Earth Day Will Not be Rooted in Immigrant Bashing
April 22, 2010
By Rebecca Poswolsky
http://www.imagine2050.net/

This Earth Day we must counter attempts to infiltrate our festivities. Anti-immigrant groups like California Population Stabilization (CAPS) and NumbersUSA are attempting to focus on overpopulation by specifically bashing immigrants and blaming them for environmental degradation. As environmentalists and activists, it is our responsibility on this day to define the significance and direction of our movement. We must address anti-immigrant bigots interested in a punitive immigration policy and decline their intentions to put forth openly racist agendas.

CAPS participated in Earth Day events in Santa Barbara this past Saturday and in San Diego last Sunday. It tabled and promoted its stance on the correlation between immigration and U.S. population levels. While CAPS considers itself an environmental group, it is important to understand where CAPS’s interests really lie. CAPS argues that immigrants are responsible for the “destruction of forests, national parks, and natural habitats….over-consumption of precious natural resources; deadly sewage on our beaches; continually expanding urban sprawl; and more.”

Rick Oltman, the media director for CAPS is also a member of the Council of Conservative Citizens, formerly known as the White Citizens Council. The Council of Conservative Citizens’ statement of principles says:

Students and Faith Community keep pressure on DeFazio over Immigration Reform

Springfield, Ore.--Last week, students from the University of Oregon, members of the local faith community and immigration reform advocates continued their pressure on Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) over the issue of Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

On Tuesday, 40 students and citizens canvassed the campus area, knocking on a combined 249 doors in 1 hour. Their message focused on Representative DeFazio and their call for him to help pass desperately needed reform legislation.

Since January, Reform Advocates around the state have been ramping up pressure on Oregon's Congressional Delegation calling for them to stop the pain that families are suffering under our current broken immigration system and support immigration reform. As Congressman DeFazio has refused to commit to anything on immigration reform, residents of Lane County have been increasing in their engagement over the issue holding events throughout the district.

At least five of the seven members of the Oregon's Congressional delegation have committed to working to pass reform legislation. Congressman Earl Blumenauer has joined on as a Co-Sponsor of Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity (CIR-ASAP) Act of 2009 (HR 4321) and has been an outspoken advocate for reform.

On Saturday, over 80 members of the local Catholic Faith Community gathered for a prayer vigil outside the Springfield home of Congressman DeFazio. The group largely from St. Alice Catholic Church of Springfield and St. Mary's Catholic Church of Eugene engaged in song and prayer while holding signs and candles calling on the Congressman to hear the voices of justice and support HR 4321.

During the vigil, the Congressman's neighbors, many who attended, were very supportive of the action. One neighbor even brought his car with a lamp to provide lighting for the vigil.

There is a growing frustration around the nation as members of Congress stall on immigration reform while families are being separated. People of faith in communities across the country are urging Congress to reform the country's broken immigration system this year.

The Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity (CIR-ASAP) Act of 2009 (HR 4321) was introduced in Congress on December 15, 2009 by Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez and would:

  • Create millions of new taxpayers by requiring undocumented immigrants to register, go through background checks, pay taxes, and study English on their way to becoming full U.S. citizens.
  • Protect workers and help with economic recovery
  • Keep families together
  • Protect the due process rights of all
  • The Senate has yet to introduce a Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill, although the Democratic Leadership and the President has said that they plan to pass reform legislation this year.

    We Love Taxes

Originally posted at Reform Immigration for America
While the media is sure to pay attention to the crowds of angry tax payers protesting their contribution to the country today, there are millions of people across the country who feel very differently.

Peaceful crowds of immigration reform supporters bearing signs with slogans stating “We Love Taxes!” and “Viva Taxes!” gathered outside post offices in several cities yesterday (and will again today) to rally for tax day – arguably one of the most dreaded days of the year -to make their point. While some Americans are complaining about their burden as citizens, immigrants are clamoring for the opportunity to do more.

A recent report from the Immigration Policy Center and the Center for American Progress found that legalization of undocumented immigrants would generate between $4.5 billion and $5.4 billion in tax revenues over three years. The cost of inaction adds up.

By these calculations, the United States could be gaining $188,227 every hour. But instead, that money is lost to our ailing economy because of inaction on immigration reform.

Take a stand: send a blank tax form to Congress to represent the money that immigration reform could bring into our ailing economy.

Later today, we will be delivering these tax forms to Senator Kay Bailey Huthchison, who will be an important voice in the fight for immigration reform. On Tax Day, we want to show her just how high the cost of inaction on immigration reform is. And, that unlike some others, we love taxes.

Senate Leadership Pledges to Pass Immigration Reform this Year

Reform Advocates in Oregon pledge to keep Pressure on Congress and President

Salem, Ore. --Over the weekend, organizations held marches and rallies in major cities around the U.S. to speak out against the nation's outdated and broken immigration system and to call on Congress and President Obama to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Actions held in Las Vegas, Chicago, Brooklyn, El Paso, Philadelphia, Providence, and Seattle on Saturday were part of the national campaign to continue to ratchet up pressure on Congress to get reform legislation passed this year.

During a five minute speech at a rally in Las Vegas, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), told over 6000 immigration reform advocates that, "We're [Congress] going to pass immigration reform, just as we passed health care reform." Saying that he had 56 votes and needed a "handful of Republicans, he told the crowd that, "We're going to come back, we're going to have comprehensive immigration reform now. We need to do this year. We cannot wait."

"The pressure that individuals and organizations like CAUSA and others are exerting on members of Congress is having an impact," said Francisco Lopez, Executive Director of CAUSA. "With nationwide marches and rallies from over the weekend and the March 21st action in D.C., they have come to discover fast that we mean business in getting immigration reform passed this year. Families have waited far too long."

In unity with leaders and activists from around the nation representing faith, labor, immigrant and civil rights communities, CAUSA will continue its pressure on Oregon's Congressional Delegation and the President until immigration reform is passed.

Will the Real Republican Party Stand Up for Comprehensive Immigration Reform?

Chairman Steele and the RNC Flip Flop on Promises Made to Immigration Advocates

Washington D.C. - Yesterday at a meeting with immigration reform advocates, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele promised a public statement in support of comprehensive immigration reform and pledged to work hard to get additional Senate Republicans to join Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) in advancing bi-partisan immigration reform legislation with Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY). Hours later, one of his many handlers backpedaled from the Chairman's explicit promises to advocates. The following is a statement from Rich Stolz, Campaign Manager of the Reform Immigration FOR America Campaign:

Apparently, the Chairman's promises and reassurances that the RNC wanted what was right for the country with regard to immigration reform were an early April Fool's joke on America. It is no joke that the Chairman's bungled leadership and small minded thinking on immigration reform appear to pervade the halls of the RNC to the detriment of the Republican Party. As many Republican leaders surely know, America desperately needs comprehensive immigration reform. Rather than letting the RNC issue statements of denial, Chairman Steele should speak for himself, and tell the American people what he told immigration advocates on Tuesday.

But unlike Chairman Steele, there are Republicans in America who have the courage to stand up for what's right for the nation. Senator Lindsey Graham has shown great courage by stepping forward and committing to sponsor immigration reform legislation. He joins other Republican leaders like President Ronald Reagan, President George W. Bush and Senator John McCain (R-AZ), who led efforts to reform our broken immigration system. More recently, other conservative and GOP leaders have gone on record calling for comprehensive immigration reform-former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, former Immigration and Customs Enforcement head Julie Myers, and current members of Congress such as Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), who addressed 200,000 people, including conservatives, gathered on the National Mall on March 21st to call for immigration reform.

America needs principled leadership from both the Democratic and Republican Parties, and not the retracted promises of Michael Steele, nor the shrill, antiquated anti-immigrant voices of others in the extremist wings of the Republican Party. We hope other leaders - and there are many in the Republican Party - and Republican Senators will follow the example of Graham, Diaz-Balart, DeLay, Myers and others and rise to the occasion to solve one of our nation's toughest problems. The Campaign will work with leaders of both parties to make comprehensive immigration reform a reality in Congress this year.

High Court extends right to due process to immigrants

Supreme Court extends rights of immigrants to due process

    Originally posted on Standing FIRM.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court made a landmark decision that upholds due process for immigrants in court. The decision means that any immigrant defendant has a right to be informed about whether or not a plea could lead to deportation.

    From the Washington Post:
The severity of deportation – the equivalent of banishment or exile – only underscores how critical it is for counsel to inform her noncitizen client that he faces a risk of deportation,” said Justice John Paul Stevens, who wrote the opinion for the court.

The decision puts a new burden on lawyers to advise immigrant clients about the consequences of a guilty plea…”
Jose Padilla, the defendant in the case, had lived in the United States for 40 years as a legal permanent resident and was facing automatic deportation for a plea made in 2001. He was told by his lawyer that the plea would not affect his immigration status.

    Yesterday’s decision ruled that:
“It is our responsibility under the Constitution to ensure that no criminal defendant – whether a citizen or not – is left to the ‘mercies of incompetent counsel.’”
This is a big victory for immigrant rights in the U.S. legal system, though it comes at the cost of thousands of deportations that should have been legally avoided.
