Support Tuition Equity for All Oregon Students and Our State
The Oregon Student Association has released this new video on Senate Bill 742, Oregon's Tuition Equity Bill. SB742 will ensure that every Oregon student has fair access to quality and affordable higher education. It will also make it possible for all Oregon Students, regardless of their citizenship status, to be able to pay in-state tuition. Besides capitalizing on taxpayer investment in Oregon's K-12 students, it will boost the education level of Oregon's workforce and boost our state economy.
Senate Bill 742 has already passed the Oregon State Senate and now is in the House. SB742 is about education, opportunity and advancement for Oregon, AND it deserves a vote on the Oregon House Floor! The goal of this year's Immigrant Action Day is to train CAUSA's base of supporters and to mobilize them to take action in the 2011 Oregon legislative session.
Among the pressing issues to be discussed are those facing the Latino immigrant community, including driver's license access, health equity, tuition equity and immigration reform, among other things. Local speakers and organizers will be joined by national speakers, including Mayron Payes with the Center for Community Change and Yahaira Carrillo, DREAM Activist and LGBT leader.

Representative Gutierrez calls birthright citizenship bill recycled hatred and bigotry
Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) appeared on the of MSNBC's "The Ed Show" to discuss legislation to deny birthright citizenship to children born in the United States to parents who are undocumented.
Gutierrez says the the bill (H.R.140), introduced by Rep. Steve King (R-IOWA), is just "Recycling hatred and bigotry and prejudice so they don't have to deal with the fundamental problems facing the American People".

On Sunday, children held a march and rally calling for the protection of the 14th Amendment and passage of Immigration Reform. They said no to racial profiling laws like SB1070, called for an end to deportations and the separation of their families.

Second-Grader Expresses Worry to First Lady About her Mother's Immigration Status
While President Barack Obama held a press conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and talked about Arizona's Racial Profiling Law, First Lady Michele Obama and Mexico’s First Lady Margarita Zavala visited an elementary school in Silver Spring, Maryland. As the First Lady sat with children, one 2nd grader spoke up.

The student shyly raised her hand and said, "My mom ... she says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn't have papers."

CNN refuses to run ad calling for Lou Dobbs' ouster
Last Thursday America's Voice began airing a new ad on MSNBC continuing the call for CNN to drop Lou Dobbs. According to their website, dispite raising the funds to air the ad on CNN, CNN executives refused to air their PSA titled "Drop the Hate, Drop Dobbs".
America's Voice has been raising money at their website to run the ad. Since the beginning of the campaign, the organization has already raised $16,000 from online donations.

Jewish Organization Launches Campaign for Immigration Reform
This week President Obama said we might not get Comprehensive Immigration Reform until next year. But families are suffering and they can't wait until next year.
Today, the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA) released a thought-provoking video titled "We Were Strangers, Too". The video shows a Latino immigrant and Jewish immigrant telling similar stories. But there's a twist.

Justice for Joe Arpaio
Should "America's Toughest Sheriff" get a free pass on his controversial tactics? Should he round up immigrants at traffic stops and force them to sleep in separate "Tent Cities" in the desert?
With over 2,700 lawsuits against him, a history of virulently anti-immigrant and anti-Latino tactics, and 40,000 felony warrants outstanding in his jurisdiction, Arpaio has fostered a climate in which real criminals roam free while hard-working immigrants live in fear.
