80 March and Rally for Immigration Reform in Bend

February 13, 2010

Bend, Ore--On Friday, close to 80 people including members of Recursos para Derechos Humanos, Central Oregon Jobs with Justice, CAUSA, Oregon's Immigrant Rights Coalition and residents of Deschutes County marched to the district office of Congressman Greg Walden (R-OR) in Bend.

The goal of the action was to ask Congressman Walden to support the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2009 (HR1751) and to join on as a co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity (CIR ASAP) Act of 2009 (HR 4321). Both bills have wide support among business associations including those representing the Nursery and Restaurant Industry, Law Enforcement, Clergy and Faith-based Organizations, Labor Unions, Civil Rights Organizations and Community Leaders.

While gathering for the march, immigrant rights supporters were greeted by five rowdy protestors opposing immigration reform. One angry anti-reform protestor attempted in vain to block the peaceful marchers as they walked to lobby their Congressman. Regardless of the few disruptive detractors, pro-reform advocates received a great deal of positive vocal support and applause from business owners and passers-by as they marched down the sidewalk to Congressman Walden's office.

After arriving outside the office to hold a short rally, reform advocates were invited in to discuss their request. While inside, they turned in close to 500 postcards asking Congressman Walden to join as a co-sponsor of CIR-ASAP and to support the DREAM Act.

This is not the first time CAUSA and Reform Allies have communicated with Congressman Walden around the issue of Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Last year, a delegation from Oregon attended the Reform Immigration FOR America summit in Washinton D.C which included a visit to Capitol Hill. Members of CAUSA, PCUN, Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas and Rural Organizing Project met with Congressman Walden. (The photo to the left is from that visit.)

Friday's action is part of a nationwide mobilization to shore up Congressional support for the DREAM Act (HR1751) and CIR-ASAP Act (HR 4321). The event at Congressman Walden's office marked the 7th and final action of the first round of visits to Oregon's Congressional Delegation. The next round lobbying will begin in the coming weeks.

New Study Confirms Positive Impact of Immigration on Wages of Native-Born Workers

Blaming Immigrants for Native-Born Labor Declines Doesn't Add Up

Washington D.C. - The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) yesterday released a new study, Immigration and Wages, which confirms what many other economists have found: "that immigration has a small but positive impact on the wages of native-born workers overall."

This report comes on the heels of other economic reports, from across the ideological spectrum, that explain how comprehensive immigration reform will lift the wages of U.S. workers, increase tax revenue and boost consumer purchasing power.

The EPI report affirms that foreign-born and native-born workers "complement" each other in the labor market through the differing skills and abilities they bring with them to the workplace. When one fully accounts for the many differences between foreign-born and native-born workers in terms of education, occupational experience, and English-language ability, it becomes clear that they cannot simply be swapped for one another like batteries. In fact, the presence of specialized immigrant workers in the labor force tends to increase the productivity, and therefore the wages, of their native-born counterparts.

The report makes clear, the plight of low-wage native-born workers can not be blamed on immigrants as some groups have attempted to do: "Declining job quality for the least-educated American workers is due to a host of factors aside from immigration, including declining unionization rates, the eroding real value of the minimum wage, and trade practices that expose U.S. workers with low levels of education to competition from much lower wage workers around the globe." In short, scapegoating immigrants for the nation's economic woes will do nothing to help American workers.

  • To read the EPI report in its entirety click here or visit www.EPI.org.
  • For more economic studies on immigration reform see:
  • An IPC/CAP study Raising the Floor for American Workers conducted by UCLA's Dr. Raul Hinojosa shows comprehensive immigration reform that includes a legalization plan for the unauthorized workers already in our economy would contribute a cumulative $1.5 trillion to the Gross Domestic Product over ten years, as more tax revenues are collected, wages increase for U.S.-born and legalized workers, and immigrant workers spend more in our economy.

  • The libertarian Cato Institute's report Restriction or Legalization? Measuring the Economic Benefits of Immigration Reform also shows that "legalization of low-skilled immigrant workers would yield significant income gains for American workers and households."

Our Time to Fight for Immigration Reform is Now

By Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum. Originally posted on the ImmPolitic blog.

I spent the last week meeting with people from Texas to New York to California who want our nation’s broken immigration system fixed. Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives, people of faith and people of conscience, immigrant workers and American workers, labor and business – the people are angry.

They are angry at the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives.
People want solutions, and they want Washington DC to accomplish something.

All these people that I had the opportunity to talk to, coming from all different perspectives know that it’s not going to be easy. They know the politicians and the media would love to do nothing by keeping alive this tired story of legal versus illegal because they think it gets them votes or ratings. The people know Democrats have become the party of “I Can’t” and Republicans have become the party of “I Won’t.” We know we are running behind, but we are still very much in the game and at this moment our issue is unique in its ability to say to Democrats and Republicans “You’d better.”

    Because something is happening.

Recent events in Detroit, Cincinnati, Phoenix and Raleigh saw unprecedented numbers of people come out, as faith, labor, business and immigrant leaders are coming together to be counted and heard.

And it was impossible not to notice that the commitment and tenacity of each and every leader I met with over the past week has been growing stronger. Whether it is fairness in the job market, equality of tax payments or justice for all, everyone’s desire to fight is intensifying with each day.

It’s as if everyone heard Congressman Gutierrez, when he said in Los Angeles earlier this week, “You don’t go to McDonald’s and order justice at the drive through.”

We know our path to a functioning immigration system that ensures fairness, equity and justice is long, winding, and fraught with peril. Our nation has had to endure this path for decades and now, people want action.

So, although Washington DC may very well fail our Nation, we cannot fail our communities. Just as the failure to fix the broken system has hamstrung all of us, real immigration reform will help all communities. Native born workers can understand they will benefit from a reformed immigration system that equalizes the labor market, business owners understand they will benefit from a reformed immigration system that punishes unscrupulous employers, and families understand they will benefit from a reform immigration system that stabilizes communities.

The anger is real, the demand for a solution is urgent, and our time to fight is now.

    See you on March 21st!
