Families, Advocates to Rally for Administrative Relief and Immigration Reform at U.S. Senate Offices in Portland

Portland, Ore. -- In response to President Obama's recent announcement that he will delay administrative action on immigration reform, immigrant families and advocates will hold a rally on Friday, September 26th at 12 p.m., at the offices of U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley.  We will ask Oregon's U.S. Senators to join us in calling on President Obama to keep his promise by providing administrative relief and stopping deportations for thousands of immigrant families immediately.

Participants to include immigrant families and supporters, Causa Oregon, Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (Northwest Treeplanters and Farmworkers United) (PCUN), and Allies.

We will meet at Senator Ron Wyden's office at 12 Noon and then go to Merkley's office.  At each office, we will meet with staff and deliver a letter asking the Senators to stand with us in calling on President Obama to take executive action.

Both Senator Ron Wyden and Senator Jeff Merkley have been vocal supporters of immigration reform and keeping families together and they have both voted in support of legislation to reform our nation's broken immigration system.

Causa Oregon Responds to President Obama Delaying Administrative Action for Immigrant Families

Salem, Ore. – Following President Obama's decision to delay administrative action and provide relief for immigrant families, Andrea Miller, Executive Director of Causa Oregon released the following statement:

“The President's decision today to delay administrative action until after the mid-term election means immigrant parents and children will continue to lose their families to a broken, deportation-crazed system given free rein by a dysfunctional Congress."

“This delay is based in lack of courage and heartlessness. A delay of weeks may not seem like a lot to a politician in Washington D.C., but it will have tragic consequences for the fathers, mothers, sons and daughters who will be separated from their families in that time. "

“President Obama has broken yet another promise he had made to immigrant families. Backing down in the face of squeamish Democratic Senators and GOP bullies, he has put politics ahead of the lives of these families and the urgent needs of America. Immigrant families and allies in Oregon and Nationwide will respond to this lack of leadership with a brave and fierce determination to make sure promises are kept.”

This year’s American Dreamer Awards will go to:

Maria Delgado has been a volunteer of Causa for over 7 years.  In 1991 she migrated to Los Angeles from the City of Mexico and by 2006 she moved to Oregon. She is now the mother of 2 teens, a 16 and 14 year old.  Her great passion for the community and especially for her migrant peers stems from a bad experience with a 2007 raid in Portland.  From there Mujeres Del Brazalete was born. Maria is thankful for all those who support and believe in her. This is what brings her here today. 

Roque Medrano is part of Causa’s Leadership Council in Hermiston, Oregon. He has been an outstanding volunteer for civic engagement. After working in the fields for 12 hours a day, he spends his time registering his friends, neighbors and others in his community to vote. In fact, he set a personal goal of registering 200 voters and single-handedly surpassed his goal by going door-to-door.

Veronica Castro came to Causa when her husband was deported and she was left with three kids and no way to provide for her family. She started her own business and her family has been very active with Recursos and Causa. Additionally, she initiated a women's group to support mothers who find themselves struggling like herself. Currently, Veronica has to drive because her work is 7 days a week in the summer and she risks everything each time. Her personal story and the work she does to defend immigrant rights makes her an outstanding Causa community member. 

Amador Bustos is currently the President and CEO of Bustos Media Holdings, LLC; a leading ethnic language broadcasting company headquartered in Portland, Oregon.  He currently owns five AM and three FM radio stations in the Portland Vancouver market.  Five Portland stations have Spanish language formats and three have Russian language formats. The Bustos Family is also dedicated to improving educational opportunities for Hispanic youth.  In 1996 Amador, and his wife Rosalie, established the Bustos/Lopez Family Fund through the Sacramento Community Region Foundation.

The Oregon School Employees Association (OSEA) is a labor union that represents 20,000 educational employees working in Oregon school districts, community colleges, education service districts, Head Start agencies, libraries and park and recreation districts. As one of the largest labor unions in Oregon, and with the second largest membership of educational staff, OSEA is a recognized leader within the state’s labor and education community.
