Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Opens in Washington D.C.

The Washington Post reports that the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial opens to the public in Washington D.C. today. The design is derived from part of King's famous "I have a dream" speech when he said, "With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope." The memorial sits between the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials.  King, who stood as pillar for civil and human rights and economic justice for all people, is the first non-president and person of color to be honored on the national mall with a monument.

500,000 March and Rally for Immigration Reform in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. -- Today, it was reported that up to 500,000 people converged on Washington D.C. to call on President Obama and the Congress to pass immigration reform. The number of participants in today's action is far more than what was expected.

After several interfaith services around the D.C. area, organizations and individuals gathered at Photo by Reform Immigration For Americathe National Mall to demand immigration reform for new American families and economic justice for all American families.

Members of CAUSA, Oregon's Immigrant Rights Coalition and a contingent from Oregon met at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in D.C. and helped lead a march with 20,000 Latinos from the community to the National Mall. Francisco Lopez, CAUSA's Executive Director assisted in organizing the effort.

"There is nothing more inspiring than this. Hundreds of thousands of people are here in Washington D.C. to call on Congress and President Obama to pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform", said Lopez. "Reform is long overdue and our elected leaders are hearing it from all of us here at their front door and from around the nation."

Those who spoke at today's rally included Ben Jealous, president and CEO, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, Esther Lopez, director, UFCW Civil Rights and Community Action Department; Gregory A. Cendana, president, United States Student Association, Janet Murgía, president and CEO, National Council of La Raza, Marc Morial, president and CEO, the National Urban League, among others. There were also appearances by Eddie "El Piolín" Sotelo and actress Lucía Méndez and musical performance by Los Lonely Boys.

Actions will continue tomorrow as immigration reform advocates will go to the Republican National Committee to request a meeting with Chairman Michael Steele and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to urge them to support Immigration Reform and to support a bipartisanship process to get a bill passed this year.

This afternoon, the Reform Immigration For America Campaign called on all Immigration Reform supporters to call their Senator at 866-877-5552 and tell them they want immigration reform now.

[The reports on the numbers of those in attendance ranged from 200,000 to 500,000 people. Event Organizers had the number reported by the Parks Department and a Fox News Affiliate at around 500,000. While various others reported 250,000 and over. Regardless of the exact number, the action in D.C. renewed the message to Congress and the President that Immigration Reform needs to be passed this year.]

Oregonians Help Turn Up the Heat on Immigration Reform

March 19, 2010
Chris Thomas, Public News Service - OR

PORTLAND, Ore. - More than 50 Oregonians are traveling to Washington, D.C. for Sunday's March for America, a national attempt to kick-start the stalled push for immigration reform. David Leslie, executive director of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, is one of them. He says people need a clear and fair path to U.S. citizenship, and he blames the lack of progress on a lack of political will in Congress. Leslie hopes the size and scope of the national event energizes the immigrant community and other supporters.

"The real work is not going to be in Washington, D.C. - it's coming back home where you work your district, you're working with members of congregations, you're working with your community. I think a march like this provides a real boost of energy, to take some of that back home and further the cause."

Marchers will include members of faith, and business and labor groups, all of whom say immigrants deserve a fair shot at becoming U.S. citizens. Greg Delgado, Oregon coordinator for the Bend office of Jobs With Justice, will be there. He says the current system creates unnecessary hassles - and hostilities.

"We're a small community, maybe of 11,000 Latinos, here in Central Oregon. We still, on a daily basis, hear complaints - of worker violations, racial profiling with the police - that we're trying to clarify for the community as well."

Those who want tougher immigration laws say the country can't afford an influx of new citizens. Supporters of reform believe it's a human rights issue, and that people working in the U.S., even illegally, are contributing to the economy and often paying taxes. On Sunday, tens of thousands of people are expected for a rally at the Lincoln Memorial starting at 2:00 PM (EDT), followed by a march to RFK Stadium.

Oregon marchers will meet Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 3211 Pine St. NW, Washington, D.C.

Immigration Reform Advocates to March on Washington D.C.

Tens of Thousands preparing for March 21st Action, while White House holds meetings to plan reform on immigration

Salem, Ore.--Immigration Reform advocates are stepping up pressure on the Obama Administration and Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform this year and fix America's broken immigration system.

Today, Ali Nooran, the chair of the Reform Immigration for America Campaign, and other immigrant rights leaders from grassroots, labor, and faith organizations met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the next steps for comprehensive immigration reform legislation. During the meeting, the President indicated that his administration is committed to driving a bill forward this spring.

The meeting with reform advocates came just hours before the President met with Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) to discuss their bipartisan effort to sponsor comprehensive immigration reform legislation in the Senate. With Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) having already introduced a bill (HR4321) on the House side, the desperately needed reform will be right on track to pass Congress this year.

Later today, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are also expected to meet with the President to discuss the importance of passing health care and immigration reform.

"Our broken immigration system tears families apart, and keeps millions of people from living the American dream," said Francisco Lopez, Executive Director of CAUSA. "Students want to continue their educations, but can't attend college. Workers try to organize, but are kept in the shadows by their employers. Parents working to give their children better lives are facing an outdated, convoluted system. We need comprehensive immigration reform this Spring to fix our broken system and help millions of families."

On March 21st, Oregonians will join with other reform advocates from around the nation for a March on Washington D.C.. The March For America is expected to draw tens of thousands of people from the immigrant, labor, business, progressive and faith communities and will demonstrate the energy and strength to elected leaders that the need for good jobs and full citizenship for all of America's families must be fulfilled.

"Thousands of people are marching on Washington, DC. to show Congress that we can't wait any longer," said Lopez. "Too many people have been hurt by our broken immigration system, and it's time for our leaders to do the work we elected them to do. Our families, and our country, are counting on us."

In Oregon, CAUSA and reform advocates have been busy visiting the offices of Oregon's Congressional Delegation over the last couple months urging them to support Comprehensive Immigration Reform and the DREAM Act.

Last Sunday, 600 people, mostly comprised of Latino families and clergy from the Eugene-Springfield area, gathered outside the Office of Congressman Peter DeFazio. While there, they called on the Congressman to support the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity (CIR-ASAP) Act of 2009 (HR4321) and the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2009 (HR1751). Catholic leaders from Eugene and Springfield committed on Sunday to increase the pressure on DeFazio until he announces his support of both pieces of legislation.

Although some political pundits have dismissed the immigration issue as too politically risky in a mid-term election year, immigrant community leaders are making a persuasive counter argument. As they have pointed out, Latino voters are in a position to impact scores of close House and Senate races and they are increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress on immigration reform in Congress. In a year when turnout clearly matters, can Congress and the Administration afford not to make good on promises to advance comprehensive immigration reform?
