Opening Day of the Portland Day Labor Hire Site, June 16th

Portland, Or- The Voz Workers’ Rights Education Project is pleased to announce the opening of an official day labor hire site in Portland, Or, on June 16th 2008. With this historic opening, Portland will join the ranks of other US cities that have successfully used day labor sites as alternatives to street corner hiring.

The day labor hire site will provide a secure, professional environment with bilingual staff to streamline the process of connecting workers with homeowners, small businesses, and contractors. This project has been organized through the collaborative efforts of: The City of Portland, along with various community members and neighborhood groups, community organizations, business, community of faith and Day Laborers. The Hire site will give Portland’s day laborers a safe and secure place to seek decent employment, and help maintain a living wage in our community

VOZ will hold ceremony commemorating the opening of the Hire Site. This celebration will be at the new Hire Site (240 NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd) Friday, June 13, 2008, from 4pm to 6pm. Mayor Tom Potter will be present for the ribbon cutting ceremony, as will many community figures. There will be food and music by day laborers.

VOZ was established in 2000. Our mission is to secure and protect immigrant workers’ rights through education, leadership development and community organizing.
