New Health Equity Alliance Kick-off Assembly brings together Latino, African-American, Asian-American, Pacific Islanders, and Immigrant leaders in Portland, Oregon

Yesterday, close to 200 people attended the kick-off of the new Oregon Health Equity Alliance in Portland. Thank you to everyone that came out to support this new alliance of communities of color, immigrants and refugees unifying organizations and advocates across Oregon.

The Oregon Health Equity Alliance (OHEA) works to improve the well-being and prosperity for all Oregonians through policy advocacy that addresses the root causes of health disparities, improving care and lowering costs.

During the event, speakers highlighted OHEA’s Statewide Policy Agenda for 2012-2013 and told their personal stories.  The agenda for the coming legislative session includes:
  • Tuition equity for immigrant students
  • Driver's license restoration
  • Improved data collection and analysis
  • Prenatal health care for all women
  • Cultural competency training for health professionals
“It is very inspiring to have these organizations, elected leaders and individuals from around the state to come together to work on these important issues," said Francisco Lopez, Executive Director of Causa Oregon. “We are energized and ready to carry this agenda forward in the coming session and will be mobilizing our networks to make things right for families across Oregon.”

On the topic of driver’s license restoration – a top priority for Causa -- Lopez added, “There can be no excuse for the Governor and the legislature to not pass driver’s license restoration. We don’t want to wait; we don’t want any excuses.  We want the restoration of driver’s licenses now.”

OHEA is directed by a steering committee composed of regional and statewide advocacy organizations with a commitment to community organizing and engaging grassroots voices in the political process.  Interested organizations please contact a steering committee member for more information.

Member groups of OHEA’s Steering Committee include Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon, Causa Oregon, Center for Intercultural Organizing, Oregon Action, Oregon Latino Health Coalition, and Urban League of Portland.
