Causa applauds Multnomah County Sheriff’s Action to Stop Honoring ICE Holds on Low Priority Offenders

Causa applauds Multnomah County Sheriff’s Action to Stop Honoring ICE Holds on Low Priority Offenders

Salem, Ore.—Yesterday, it was announced by Willamette Week (Freezing Out ICE, 3/27/13) that Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton has drafted a resolution to begin releasing undocumented immigrants brought to his jails for low-level crimes like non-violent misdemeanors. The Sheriff has also indicated that his office will hold inmates for ICE only if they are suspected undocumented immigrants charged with felonies or Class A misdemeanors involving violent crimes. That change in policy will be voted on by the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners on April 4th.

Causa Oregon applauds Sheriff Dan Staton for his change in policy in not honoring ICE holds for immigrants suspected of low-level crimes and non-violent misdemeanors. However, we disagree that the Sheriff should be honoring any ICE detainers as they creates fear and division in the immigrant community.

Francisco Lopez, Causa’s Executive Director said, “This slight change in policy might repair the damage caused by Sheriff Staton’s slow action on the ICE program, and by his decision to send Undersheriff Tim Moore to a training last fall sponsored by the Federation for American Immigration Reform,--an organization classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.”
“We’re glad the sheriff has responded to the outcry that was put in front of him,” Lopez added.

Causa also commends members of ACT Network, faith community and community leaders for their hard work, dedication and unified voice in putting pressure on Sheriff Staton and Multnomah County to change their policies on honoring ICE holds and unjust detentions.
