Salem, Ore. -- This morning, in an historic step toward humane policy reform, the Senate “Gang of 8” introduced their immigration reform bill that represents a first step in ensuring that the 11 million undocumented immigrants living and working in America today can earn legal status and the privilege of citizenship. The political, economic, and moral imperative for legalization has never been clearer.
“The introduction of this historic bill which includes a real path to citizenship is a monumental achievement for our movement and a great starting point”, said Francisco Lopez, Executive Director of Causa Oregon. “While we applaud the "Gang of 8" for their hard work in negotiating, drafting and introducing this crucial legislation, we believe the bill, as it’s currently drafted, damages the family-based immigration system. We will join with our allies nationally and in Congress to fight to restore the American principle of family unity.”
Lopez added, “We will continue to be vigilant in raising important concerns around the following issues, among others, and to address these concerns with proposed amendments to the legislation.”

- The unreasonable exclusion of categories of undocumented immigrants from earning legal status.
- Unrealistic hurdles or contingencies that will prevent legalized immigrants from obtaining permanent residence and citizenship in a reasonable time frame.
- Restrictions on family-based sponsorship.
