Voters Protect Oregon’s Future by Passing Measures 66 and 67

On Tuesday Night, Oregonians passed Measures 66 and 67, two tax fairness measures which increases taxes on households making at or above $250, 000 ($125,000 for individuals) and raises the $10 corporate minimum tax to $150 minimum for most businesses. Prior to the passage of this measure, more than two-thirds of corporations doing business in Oregon paid just the $10 a year corporate minimum income tax.

The measures passed statewide early on in the evening. According to the Oregon Secretary of State, Measure 66 passed by 53.90% and Measure 67 passed by 53.38%.

A large group of community organizations, including unions, small business owners, advocates for children and seniors, churches, environmental organizations, and civil rights groups came together to pass the measures. Over 250 organizations formed the Yes for Oregon coalition to mobilize voters for the January election. CAUSA and our sister Organizations Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN) and Voz Hispana Causa Chavista were part of the coalition.

A special thanks goes to the Oregon Labor Movement who worked tirelessly alongside small business owners, advocates for children and seniors, churches, environmental organizations, civil rights groups and concerned individuals to pass these very important measures. Due to their hard work, jobs, schools and services that Oregonians depend on and care about have been saved.

The Graduates of the leadership program participated in many activities during the election including voter registration and Get Out The Vote (GOTV). In the coming weeks, months and years, they will continue to use the skills they have learned to further and protect rights for immigrants.

The graduation ceremony marks the 60th anniversary of Human Rights Day. The date, December 10th, was chosen to honor the United Nations' adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which establishes for all people: The Right to Equality, The Right to Freedom, The Right to Freedom of Religion, The Right against Exploitation, Cultural and Educational Rights and The Right to Constitutional Remedies.

Immigrant Rights and Latino Community Organizations Invite the Public to Join them in Watching Historic Election Returns

Woodburn, Ore-Immigrant Rights, Labor and Latino Community Organizations including Voz Hispana Causa Chavista, PCUN (Northwest Treeplanters and Farmworkers United) and CAUSA invite the public to join them this evening in waiting for the historic election results at PCUN Headquarters in Woodburn.

Last month, Voz Hispana Causa Chavista and PCUN mailed voter's guides to over 7,500 Latino voters in five Oregon cities including Woodburn, Gervais, Salem, Keizer, and Independence. Of those 7,500 Latinos receiving voters' guides, 3,500 were new voters that had been registered since December. With the explosion of new Latino Voters in Oregon, Latinos are poised to have a significant impact on tonight's election.

One important issue that will be watched closely during this evening's election returns is Ballot Measure 58. Organizations within the Latino and Immigrant rights community have been working closely with the Parents and Teachers Know Better Campaign in effort to defeat this measure.

Measure 58 would affect many families in the Latino Community as it would hinder the ability of their children to learn and grasp the English language, thereby having a detrimental impact on their future. Not to mention the costly measure would take local control away from school boards, families and educators-those who know what is best for our children-- and place it in the hands of convicted racketeer Bill Sizemore.

Today’s Voter Registration Caravan

In commemoration of the Birthday, Life and Legacy of Cesar E. Chavez, today Voz Hispana Causa Chavista and their allies will participate in a car caravan to register voters and encourage Latinos to vote in the upcoming elections.

With more than 100,000 Latinos eligible to vote in Oregon, including thousands of eligible young Latinos turning 18 years-old, the main goal of Voz Hispana is to register young Latino Voters using innovative voter registration methods like the caravan. They hope to encourage them to vote their conscience on issues affecting their lives.

Schedule:

Volunteers will gather at Noon either at Colonia Amistad, 30 S Gun Club Road, Independence; or at Colonia Libertad, 2920 Saddle Club St. SE, Salem

Depart simultaneously at 1 p.m. from Colonia Amistad and Colonia Libertad. The caravan from Colonia Amistad will travel through downtown Salem

Both caravans will arrive simultaneously at 2:00 PM at Chemeketa Community College, 4000 Lancaster Drive NE, Salem; voter registration, music, food, speakers

The Caravan will Depart at 3:30 p.m. simultaneously from Chemeketa Community College and will arrive by 4 p.m. at Woodburn High School, 1785 N Front St., Woodburn for voter registration and celebration of César E. Chávez's 81st birthday

Other Organizations participating in today’s voter registration drive include PCUN, Salem-Keizer Coalition for Equality, CAUSA, LUCHA, MECHA, First Congregational Church, St. Patrick Catholic Church Youth Group, Woodburn High School, Guadalajara Restaurant in Woodburn, LUS, Chemeketa Community College, Radio Movimiento, FHDC, and Mano a Mano Family Center.
