Anh “Joseph” Cao has become the first Vietnamese American to be elected to Congress. In whats being called an "upset victory", Cao, an eastern New Orleans immigration attorney, defeated nine term Rep. William Jefferson. Cao, (pronounced "Gow") defeated incumbent Jefferson 50% to 47%.
Congressman-elect Cao, 41, immigrated to the United States from war ravaged Vietnam when he was 8 years old, leaving his family behind. Yesterday and 33 years later, he makes history by becoming the first Vietnamese immigrant to be elected to Congress.
