Eugene City Council Passes Resolution Supporting the DREAM Act

Eugene, Ore--Last night, the Eugene City Council passed a Resolution supporting the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act.

The DREAM Act, which was introduced in Congress last year, authorizes the cancellation and the adjustment of status for certain immigrant youths who are college bound and are long term United States Residents. It would also permit states to determine state residency for purposes of higher education.

After a public forum, Resolution 5001 was voted on and passed by the city council unanimously. The meeting was well attended with most being in support of the Resolution.

Although Resolution 5001 does not affect federal legislation, the Eugene City Council joins the growing multitude of voices around the nation calling for Congress to pass the DREAM Act. Last October, members of the Portland City Council passed a similar resolution unanimously.
