Walk for Citizenship in Central Oregon to urge Congressman Walden to Support Immigration Reform with a Path to Citizenship
Salem, Ore. -- On September 15th-17th, faith leaders, advocates, union leaders and community members will come together in Central Oregon for a Walk for Citizenship to urge Congressman Greg Walden (OR-R) to support Comprehensive Immigration Reform with a path to citizenship.
Over three days, participants will walk from Madras to Bend, from the heart of Central Oregon’s agricultural community to the Central Oregon office of our Congressman Greg Walden. During the march from town to town, walkers will hold vigils and participate in community conversations and rallies.
“Representative Walden is a key voice in the national conversation on immigration reform. In August, immigrant rights advocates asked him to hold public conversations in his district on this topic, but received little response.” said Reyna Lopez, Causa’s Civic Engagement Director. “The Walk for Citizenship will bring the voices of constituents directly to his office to share our stories. We need him to commit to supporting a pathway to citizenship for 11 million immigrants and his vote in the U.S. Congress.”
Organizers are encouraging people to register to walk and get more information at http://www.causaoregon.org/walkforcitizenship. People are encouraged to participate regardless if they want to do all three days or just a portion of the three day walk.
Partners and Sponsors include St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, St. Thomas Catholic Church, AFL-CIO, Causa Oregon, Center for Intercultural Organizing, Central Oregon Jobs With Justice, Immigrant Law Group, MEChA, Oregon Action, PCUN, Rural Organizing Project, SEIU, United Farm Workers, Western States Center and Oregon AFSCME.
