According to JTA, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society "met with Bush administration officials in the U.S. Homeland Security and State Departments, as well as with lawmakers, to argue for a renewed effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform." During their D.C. visit, HAIS also advocated for extensions to the religious worker visa program, which is set to expire in September.
HAIS was founded in New York City by a group of Jewish immigrants who found sanctuary in the United States after fleeing persecution in Europe. The organization offered food, shelter and other aid to countless new arrivals. Members of the organization have a united goal of rescuing those in peril, reuniting families in freedom, and enabling newcomers to build new lives with hope and prosperity.
