Portland, Ore.--Today at noon, members of the Portland Faith and Immigrant Communities held a prayer vigil and fast in downtown Portland in response to Arizona's Racial Profiling Law, SB1070. Faith leaders prayed and called for an end to the targeting and separation of immigrant families and for passage of comprehensive immigration reform.
Isaiah 58, which inspires this day of action, teaches that a “true fast” is undertaken in service of “loosening the chains of injustice.”
“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of
injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed
go free, and to break every yoke?” Isaiah 58
The vigil was sponsored by: American Friends Service Committee, Augustana Lutheran Church, CAUSA, CSAM Committee of Solidarity and Mutual Support, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, Oregon New Sanctuary Movement, Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oregon Office of Justice and Peace/Respect Life, United Methodist Church HispanicMinistries, VOZ Worker Rights Education Program, and Zion United Church of Christ.
