Thousands Call For Supreme Court to Strike Down Anti-Immigrant Arizona Law to Show They Care for Human Rights

This release comes from the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM).  The Fair Immigration Reform Movement is a national coalition of grassroots organizations fighting for immigrant rights at the local, state and federal level. Causa Oregon is a part of FIRM Coalition.

Thousands Call For Supreme Court to Strike Down Anti-Immigrant Arizona Law to Show They Care for Human Rights

Broad Coalition of Groups Calls for Unity and Justice for All

(WASHINGTON)—Thousands of grassroots leaders today called on the Supreme Court to strike down Arizona’s anti-immigrant law to show they care for human rights, unity and justice for all.

Arizona’s SB 1070, infamously referred to as the “show me your papers” law, and similar laws enacted in other states, has undermined basic civil and human rights and essentially has legalized harassment and discrimination, said leaders of the Fair Immigration Reform Movement, a network of community-based immigrant advocacy organizations in 25 states.

“SB 1070 takes a sledgehammer to human rights, destroying what America has always been known for: a nation that prides itself on justice for all,” said Deepak Bhargava, Executive Director of the Center for Community Change. “Under SB 1070, there is only justice for people with the right skin color.”

“Arizona’s proposed solution to our broken immigration system, like Alabama’s law and the anti-immigrant laws passed by several other states, is no solution at all. America’s immigrants are our neighbors, our co-workers and our future,” said John Wilhelm, President of UNITE Here. “Criminalization and unfair targeting of our immigrant brothers and sisters is nothing more than scapegoating aimed at dividing us and distracting our attention from the real problems we face – a lack of good jobs and the capture of our political system by the rich and powerful.”

Warren Stewart, senior pastor of the First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix, Ariz., was among the Arizonans who traveled to Washington to protest outside the Supreme Court. Stewart is also chairman of the board of directors for the National Immigration Forum, and a board member of Promise Arizona. Stewart noted that former Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce spoke at a counter rally at the Supreme Court this morning, and reminded participants that Pearce, author of SB1070, was removed from office by recall because of his extremism on immigration and other issues important to Arizonans, and emphasized the growing power of a new civil rights movement in America.

Alabama Democratic State Senator Hank Sanders described that the Alabama legislature is poised to make several changes to its own copycat of the Arizona immigration law. He has called on his own legislature to repeal Alabama’s law, which has become a potent reminder of Alabama’s racial history. Sanders also said he has been inspired by the coming together of African America, Latino, immigrant and other communities demanding an end to Arizona-style laws.

Gustavo Torres, Executive Director of CASA de Maryland, emphasized the sense of unity among participants:

“We are united--Latinos, immigrants, civil rights organizations, African American leaders, Asian American leaders, organized labor and faith leaders--in calling for unity and justice in America. One good thing that SB1070 and other laws that have attacked worker rights, voting rights and immigrant rights has done is to bring us together,” Torres said.

End Racial Profiling, Make Us All Safer

Washington, D.C. — This morning the Senate’s Constitution and Civil Rights Subcommittee is convening to discuss “Ending Racial Profiling in America.” This is the first Senate hearing in more than ten years to focus on racial profiling, even though federal and state laws passed during that time have required profiling based on race and ethnicity in order to be implemented. The following is a statement by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum.

“From every part of the country, evidence has emerged that the very real practice of racial profiling makes us less safe. It distracts law enforcement time and resources away from the efficient, targeted pursuit of individuals who actually pose a threat to public safety, and it undermines community trust.

“When victims and witnesses of crimes are afraid to come forward for fear of being profiled, the safety of all of us is threatened. In addition, laws that codify racial profiling, including but not limited to Arizona’s S.B. 1070 immigration law, divert valuable resources away from solving serious crimes. Any law that encourages discrimination is just plain wrong.

“Racial profiling also betrays fundamental American values of equality. Treating people of color with more suspicion, whether their families have been in this country for one generation or ten, undermines not only the constitutional rights of targeted groups, but also our core principles on which these rights are based.

“We welcome the opportunity Congress is taking to discuss the unfair, ineffective and harmful practice of racially motivated enforcement. We urge Congress to pass the “End Racial Profiling Act” (ERPA), which would ban racial profiling at the federal, state and local level. We also urge the Obama administration to reform the 2003 Department of Justice Guidance to explicitly reject profiling based on national security or religion and to close loopholes regarding border and national security. These concrete steps would bring our nation closer to banning the ineffective and unjust practice of racial profiling.”

Anti-tax Group’s Straw Poll on SB1070 would crumble under the facts

In a post over at the right-wing Oregon Catalyst blog,  the 'Taxpayer Association of Oregon' said that in a “straw poll” of 335 of their supporters, 318 support passage of SB1070, Arizona's controversial racial profiling law, in Oregon.

Even given the informal results of a straw poll, it is curious how members of a group that claims to support fiscal responsibility and opposes the growth of government would support a law that could potentially cost Oregonians hundreds of millions of dollars.

Last week, the Associated Press reported that a bill modeled on Arizona's SB1070 in Utah would cost state and local governments millions of dollars each year. According to the article, Utah cities and counties would need to spend between $5.3 million and $11 million per year to verify the identity of people and detain undocumented immigrants.

It is anyone’s guess how much such a law would cost to implement in Oregon. It certainly could be concluded that the price tag would be comparative and have a detrimental impact on Oregon’s economy and serious consequences on public safety.

Many states once contemplating going the route of Arizona, are now rethinking their positions. The Washington Post reported that that since it’s passage, SB1070 has cost Arizona $250 million in tax revenue, wages and visitor expenditures. Not to mention the legal costs to defend it has mounted into the millions with every judicial decision going against the law.

A Southern Poverty Law Center report released last month also found that because of the mounting legal costs over such legislation, one community had to raise property taxes, while another was forced to cut personnel and outsource its library. In a down economy, this was the last thing that those communities need and it is sure that most Oregonians would agree that it is the last thing our state needs.

The fact is, Oregon does not need the hefty price tag of a law modeled on Arizona’s SB1070. And with Oregonians craving common sense and workable solutions to our state’s problems, Oregon legislators like Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer) should have plenty to do instead of introducing bills that would create a divisive political climate, promote racial profiling, place undue economic burdens on our small businesses and cause a threat to public safety.

Children Rally for Civil Rights and Immigration Reform at State Capitol

On Saturday, 268 people gathered at the Oregon State Capitol to participate in a Children's March & Rally for Immigration Reform. The children with their adult supporters joined together to call on Federal and State Legislators to:

• Respect the 14th Amendment. Do not take away our children's citizenship.
• Stop dividing families
• Keep racial profiling laws like SB1070 out of Oregon
• Stop local law enforcement from doing the job of ICE. Our State Police, County Sheriff and City Police belong to our communities, not the federal government.
• Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform NOW!

Here is a selection of photos from the event:
Over the last several months, immigration restrictionists and right-wing extremist politicians in Congress have been calling for a change in the 14th Amendment eliminating citizenship to babies born on United States soil. Instead of promoting immigration reform that would overhaul a severely flawed and broken system, they see it politically opportune to deny citizenship and promote deportation of infants and children.

This is just one of the latest stunts being promoted by extremists to avoid dealing with an important national issue that needs a federal response. Much like passage of Arizona's Racial Profiling Law SB1070, the build-up of troops on the U.S.-Mexico border and the variety of failed enforcement-only policies promoted by the far-right, these wrong headed and misguided schemes are just dividing families and delaying the benefit real reform would bring to our country.

There is currently legislation in both houses of Congress that would overhaul the nation’s broken immigration system.

Would You Ask This Man For His Papers?

From the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU):
Would you ask this man for his papers? Why? Because of the color of his skin? Because of the language he's speaking? Because he's doing yard work?

The fact is, there is no way to tell who is documented and who is not. If SB 1070 is allowed to go into effect, American citizens WILL be subjected to racial profiling. People in this country legally will be stopped, interrogated and harassed simply because of what they look like or the language they are speaking.

That's not right and it's not constitutional. Help us protect the constitution. Help us stop SB 1070. What Happens in Arizona, Stops in Arizona.

False ‘Border Security’ Debate is Immigration’s Oil Spill, Obama Will Meet With AZ Governor Brewer

By Jackie Mahendra. Originally posted on the America’s Voice blog.

It’s like a raging oil spill, but without those fancy underwater cameras.

Lack of comprehensive immigration reform has allowed an untenable situation to explode into dangerous platitudes, scapegoating, and solve-nothing politics. It has enabled fearful Republican politicians in the heat of challenging midterm elections to exploit the thorny issue of immigration. Ironically, research shows that if politicians would demonstrate a real plan for federal immigration reform, these same officials would see a major boost in support among the majority of voters, who desperately want illegal immigration solved.

For now, like an out-of-control oil slick, Arizona’s controversial new law is poised to spread in a big way — to two dozen other states in the coming months, in the absence of a federal fix. Unlike an out-of-control leak, however, there is a well-documented solution that the majority of Americans support.

Police Chiefs say Arizona Law will cause a rise in crime

Yesterday, U.S. police chiefs said that Arizona's law will "intimidate crime victims and witnesses who are illegal immigrants and divert police from investigating more serious crimes". The statements against the measure came as chiefs of police from Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Tucson, San Jose and Montgomery County met with Attorney General Eric Holder in D.C. to discuss the law.
"This is not a law that increases public safety. This is a bill that makes it much harder for us to do our jobs," Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said. "Crime will go up if this becomes law in Arizona or in any other state."

Second-Grader Expresses Worry to First Lady About her Mother's Immigration Status

While President Barack Obama held a press conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and talked about Arizona's Racial Profiling Law,  First Lady Michele Obama and Mexico’s First Lady Margarita Zavala visited an elementary school in Silver Spring, Maryland.  As the First Lady sat with children, one 2nd grader spoke up.

ABC News’ Karen Travers reports what happened:
The student shyly raised her hand and said, "My mom ... she says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn't have papers."

Mrs. Obama replied: "Yeah, well that's something that we have to work on, right? To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right? That's exactly right."

Reform Immigration For America to Begin Sustained Campaign of Civil Disobedience

Enough Is Enough; President and Congress Must Lead

Washington, DC - Today, Reform Immigration FOR America announced its participation in a sustained campaign of civil disobedience in conjunction with immigrants' rights organizations across the nation. A combination of an enforcement only approach from the administration, draconian anti-immigrant laws like Arizona's SB1070, and lack of leadership - from the President and Republicans - have created a national crisis in America. The following is a statement from Rich Stolz, Campaign Manager of Reform Immigration FOR America:
